Drama Therapy

The winds of grace are always blowing but you have to raise the sail.

— Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

The origins of human culture can be found in ancient forms of storytelling and theatre. Ritual, song, dance and enactment have always been cornerstones of personal and collective expression.

Together, these practices build community cohesion while enabling the expansion of consciousness and the resolution of trauma. Drama therapy is rooted in these time-tested traditions.

Usually applied in a group context, drama therapy is most frequently used for healing and personal growth. Drama therapy involves embodied storytelling, role play and improvised enactment. It promotes creativity, connectedness, empathy, and expressiveness. The process of drama therapy also invites new perspectives and the practice of preferred actions.

Come with me into the woods where spring is advancing, as it does, no matter what, not being singular or particular, but one of the forever gifts, and certainly visible.

— Mary Oliver

In my approach to drama therapy, I integrate classical psychodrama, Internal Family Systems, the Therapeutic Spiral Model, Playback Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed, along with dance, movement, singing, voice work and mindfulness.

Since 2009 I have been leading drama therapy groups and workshops internationally, working closely with communities impacted by poverty, war and violence.  I have also established and taught in numerous training programs that use therapeutic drama and applied theatre for community building and trauma healing.

I hold a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy from the California Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS).  I have studied with Zerka Moreno, Rene Emunah, Kate Hudgins, Mario Cossa, Armand Volkas and other practitioners.

I am a Registered Drama Therapist (RDT) and a Board-Certified Trainer (BCT) with the North American Drama Therapy Association.  I am also an Accredited Playback Theatre Trainer through the Centre for Playback Theatre, New York.
